Lifetime Folding Tables - Polyethylene Plastic Review
Why do companies produce blow-molded tables?
Traditional folding tables were designed with convenience in storing in mind. The idea that a person or business who set of a banquet style seating arrangement in a few moments, and take it down just as quickly, appealed to many people. The one thing that was not considered, or was not really possible, was convenience in moving the tables and chairs. Traditional folding tables were made out of heavy wood, or pressboard, and had a heavy iron (sometimes steel) frame work. This provided for a very stable unit but would way at upwards of 150 lbs. Needless to say, these types of tables were not and are not easy to move around. What the industry was thirsty for was a light-weight banquet-style option.
Blow-molding is the process of taking plastic material and shaping it to a predesigned mold. One of the benefits of this process is the ease of flexibility in design. When a company uses this process, they can take on virtually any shape or design specification desired. Thus, blow-molding provides a plus in engineering over the traditional pressboard / wood top tables. Another benefit of the blow-molding process is the light-weight nature of plastic when compared to wood. A typical blowmolded table could way as much as 35% less when compared to a wood topped table. With this design, you now have the convience of storage as well as convenience in movement. Finally, the blow-molding process is cheaper overall. Tables built with this process are typically sold for 30% the cost of a comparable sized wood topped folding table.
What is polyethylene plastic?
Polyethylene plastic a synthetic material created by polymerization of the ethylene molecule. The benefits of this plastic over traditional plastics is its resistance to breakage. Polyethylene is the plastic used in milk carton, which absorbs impact very well. Do not, however, confuse this plastic with the inherent wimpiness of milk carton designs as the folding tables that use this plastic typically have over 100 times the thickness of milk cartons; the point of the milk carton comparison is to point out the ability to absorb impact. To further illustrate this point, a common test that manufacturers use to point out polyethylene's strength is the barricade demonstration. In certain cities in the United States use plastic barricades filled with water to mark off areas in construction zones. The demonstration shows that these traditional plastic material will break when dropped from a certain height, spilling the water out everywhere. But, the polyethylene plastic barricade, when dropped from the same height, will just touch down with a thud but no breakage.
The production process used by Lifetime Products in producing their tables also makes their polyethylene UV resistant. In comparison, traditional plastics are known to fade and crack over time. This happens because of the chemical makeup of these older plastics and is virtually unavoidable when the plastic is exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time. Polyethylene plastic will not fade, crack, or peel like these other plastics.
