Team Working: The 7 Biggest Barriers To Team Performance
Teams deliver results. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. When they work, they achieve some amazing results. By the same token, there are also barriers that inhibit team performance. Here my top 7:
Barrier 1: The Glory Seekers
A bit of healthy competition never did anyone any harm. On the other hand, if you have unhealthy levels of competition or, worse still, the person who wants to take all of the glory for everything, you are in big trouble. Be alert to behaviours where one or a few are trying to take all of the glory.
Barrier 2: The Whiners
Picture the scene. You have been asked to be part of a team that is tasked with tackling a particular challenge or problem. You get together for the first time and find that the team is polluted with what I will call the whiners. You know, the types who focus all of their energy on all of the problems so that they have no energy to suggest solutions.
Barrier 3: The Chatterboxes
We all love to have the opportunity to get our point or idea across. The trouble is that some love the sound of their own voice so much that they never allow others to speak or, if they do, they don't listen.
Barrier 4: The One Trick Ponies
Another familiar group, who are only interested if it is their ideas or way of working that are getting consideration. Sometimes they are so one dimensional that they throw their toys out of the pram when they are not getting their own way.
Barrier 5: The Spineless Leader
No one said that leading a team was easy. By the same token, when you have the spineless leader in charge, they will often go to extremes to avoid taking decisions or compromise so much that what gets decided is almost useless.
Leading a team is not all about being popular and you sometimes have to put results ahead of popularity.
Barrier 6: The Wise After The Event Crew
These are the people who, when things don't go to plan, come up with 101 ways of saying that they knew it would not work. Anyone can analyse with the benefit of hindsight. Making the right choices is the challenge.
Barrier 7: The Lone Rangers
The people who, despite understanding the difference a team will make, cannot put trust in others and want to do it all by themselves. This might be fine in the short term but ultimately they will de-rail the team.
The Bottom Line: A team has the potential to perform and achieve great things. At the same time, addressing some of the common barriers can make a big difference to the results achieved.
